Tasting Notes-Correlation between music and wine (VIC)

Tasting Notes - the Music of Wine

You have never been to a wine dinner quite like this...

Deep in the hills of Tuscany, a winegrower plays classical music to his vines. In a dark underground cellar in Austria, a winemaker points a microphone at his bubbling fermentations and releases the recordings on CD. In California, a wine scientist demonstrates how listening to different styles of music can transform the flavour of the wine in your mouth. And in New York, a restaurateur matches wines and food with the songs of Led Zeppelin - played really loud.

Ten Minutes by Tractor presents a very special dinner exploring the surprising, intimate and ancient connections between the wines we drink and the music we listen to. Diners will learn how music affects taste; how wine can lubricate musical creativity; how there is music to be found in the sounds of wine; how musical culture and wine culture have inspired each other throughout history. The event has been devised by a band of music-loving winos (or should that be wine-loving musos?): well-known wine writer and mandolin player, Max Allen; Italian grape variety specialist and composer, Kim Chalmers; natural winemaker and flautist James Erskine; and percussionist Eugene Ughetti. As well as matching recorded music to wines throughout the dinner, this quartet will also perform a number of pieces live - including a brand new work by Kim Chalmers inspired by some of James Erskine's wines.

The six course dinner/concert/workshop will feature single vineyard pinot noirs from Ten Minutes by Tractor as well as little-known Italian varietals from Chalmers, fresh wines from Natural Selection Theory and other wines from as far afield as northern France and southern California. The menu has been designed to enhance the combination of wine and music - from the clean bright flavours of ceviche to a hearty pasta dish of orrechiete (little ears' - we couldn't resist) and the classicism of a passionfruit curd tart.

Audience participation will be encouraged: diners will have the opportunity to make music of their own. Senses will be teased, seduced and challenged. There might even be dancing.
